I am a walking shoutout for Hazel Bell Koski’s work because I have 7 of my favorite kinship flags sewed onto my best hoodie. I also have half a dozen on the walls of my room, and I wake up every morning gazing at her beautifully framed raven. Of course, this does not compare to being able to walk through the forest and see a line of flags casting blessings into the breeze. These flags always say “all my relations.” David RocheRoberts Creek

Hazel’s flags hang in multiple rooms in our home and have provided our family with magic, adornment and protection for many years. The beautiful art and impeccable use of fabric and colour bring love and spirit to our spaces. Most recently we adorned our dying mother with a set of flags that helped provide beauty and ceremony to the hospice space she passed in bringing us all great comfort. At first encounter these flags are attractive and magnetic. But, as you get closer to the true field they create you realize they are so much more…they create a zone of shimmering potential. They protect, they illuminate, they are a world of their own. It’s a difficult thing to put into words, I’m grateful to have met them and hope to encounter them again, and again and again. I recently had the pleasure Of viewing hazel’s flags they were beautifully designed and thought-provoking pieces of art. Each flag in the collection was unique and showcased the creativity and talent of the artists behind them. The use of colors, patterns, and symbols was truly mesmerizing. One of the things that stood out to me was the diversity of themes and messages conveyed through these flags. Some flags represented cultural heritage and traditions, while others explored social or political issues. It was a powerful reminder of how art can be a medium for expressing ideas and sparking conversations. They made me reflect on the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect people. Overall, the Kinship Flag installations are a delightful experience.

The prayer flags contain a resonance that instantly transforms any space- indoors or outdoors and evokes a deep remembering that this space is sacred. They communicate silently as they dance in the wind, “welcome, we are glad you are here, be, become, behold the beauty that is surrounding you- that is you.” The heart, wisdom and creative energy that inspires each one of the symbols and images in the prayer flag carry a potency that reminds us that we too are sacred and a part of all life, woven together like colorful patches of fabric hanging from above. Hazel has a deeply refined and spirit led process for guiding folks into creating imagery that will be stenciled onto the flags, and then they take on a life of their own. Hazel and the flags steward sacred spaces and create containment for belonging, remembrance and deep connection to place and the space that echoes from the deepest chambers of our hearts.Sara SnedekerArtist, Facilitator, Death Doula Astoria, OR
